Shamrock Shuffle 8k Training: Week 5

Have you ever had one of those weeks when you just Do. Not. Want. To. Run.? Well, that was last week (and this week, for that matter) for me. I came up with every excuse in the book, and most of them were legitimate: I had a lot of school work last week. This was all very time-consuming; I had a constant headache last week. I was stressed about internship stuff. I don’t want to go into the details because that might be unprofessional, but I will say that the search process has left me full of anxiety. My legs were SO SORE. You can all see that I’ve been running very little (3x/week) with only occasional cross training. I was a bum for a long time after completing a marathon in 2012 and I guess I’m still getting used to moving my body. This is clearly not a professional running blog. I hurt my knee on the elliptical. Am I the only one who gets runner’s knee from the elliptical more often than from actual running? Despite my knees, fatigue, and whatever else, I actually managed to go to the gym 4 times. I replaced one of my running days with the elliptical, which wound up being a poor choice because I hurt my knee. It’s finally feeling back to normal, though! Here is what I did:

20140312-132614.jpg Monday: Scheduled rest day. Tuesday: Skipped my run because I felt really sore/fatigued/stressed. Wednesday: Decided to elliptical instead of run due to still feeling burned out. Knee felt pretty sore after this. Thursday: 40 minute tempo run. Now THAT was a good workout. Friday: Knee hurt so I took a rest day. Saturday: Knee still hurt so I rode the bike. The bike didn’t aggravate my knee at all πŸ™‚ Sunday: Ran 6 miles, knee felt OK. I think my body is trying to tell me that it’s time for some rest. Luckily, this is another major step back week. I plan to use it… And perhaps take too much advantage of it. I’m exhausted from more than just running and could use a week to truly chill out. A step back will fuel my final real week of training that will be pretty intense. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body πŸ™‚
